A Little Bit About Me…
Tiffany Carter, LM, CPM, IBCLC
When I started my journey to becoming a midwife...
I was working at two local hospitals. At that point, I had been working in healthcare for nearly 10 years. While I was exposed to myriad specialty areas in healthcare, cutting-edge technology, and surrounded by many excellent healthcare practitioners—I had a strong desire to find a health service with a more holistic approach and continuity of care and had a strong affinity for providing preventative care.
I made a powerful connection with the Midwives Model of Care, which emphasizes providing individualized, high-quality care and is rooted in acknowledging pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and menopause as normal processes.
Rather than viewing the pregnant person through the lens of technology and pathology, the midwife uses low-intervention, hands-on techniques, has increased contact with clients, and incorporates the client in decision making about their own care. Most importantly, midwives respect the process of pregnancy and birth as a healthy, normal transition that can have a momentous impact on a family. Homebirth with a competent midwife can be a safe choice for the healthy, low-risk pregnant person. One of my primary goals as a midwife is to provide a safe option for homebirths for our community.
My training as a midwife and lactation consultant allows me to be an expert in normal perinatal care as a whole, but I believe that the client is the expert in their own body and day to day experience; bringing these two areas of expertise together makes for an excellent partnership with safe outcomes.
I believe that the ability to truly hear my client on any detail—from concerns to joys—is one of the best gifts that I can offer.
Since becoming a midwife in 2013, I have also had the joy of becoming a mother to the most wonderful and vibrant little boy!
My personal experience of pregnancy, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding, and beyond is filled with moments of pure bliss, struggle, fear, triumph, joy, and pride. I have learned so much from my personal journey to motherhood and it refuels my passion daily to support people in finding empowerment in their own experiences. In fact, my personal postpartum experience inspired me to pursue the highest credential in the field of lactation care. Alongside my midwifery work, I provide both in-home and office care as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant to our community.
When I am not working in the field or the classroom, I can be found curled up in a corner with a good book, hiking, riding my bike, swimming, or knitting. Most importantly—my highest joy is spending time with my son!
